If some radiators are too hot to touch while others remain lukewarm, your central heating system may need balancing. This straightforward adjustment controls how much hot water flows through each radiator, helping every room reach a more comfortable temperature.

Is radiator balancing the right fix?

Balancing is often suitable when radiators close to the boiler heat quickly, but those further away take much longer or stay cool. It can also help if rooms warm unevenly despite the boiler and thermostat working normally.

Balancing will not usually solve a radiator that is cold because of trapped air, a stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), internal sludge or a circulation fault. Deal with those basic issues first, or arrange professional advice if you are unsure.

Prepare your tools and work area

You will need a radiator key, an adjustable spanner and a notebook or phone for recording adjustments. A pair of clip-on pipe or surface thermometers is optional, but useful for checking the temperature difference between the flow and return pipes.

  • Allow the heating system to cool before removing or adjusting anything.

  • Protect flooring with an old towel, especially near valves.

  • Never force a valve, as old fittings can leak or become damaged.

  • Keep children and pets away from hot radiators and exposed pipework.

Make sure all radiator valves can be identified. The TRV normally has a numbered dial, while the lockshield valve is usually covered by a small cap and adjusted with an adjustable spanner. The lockshield controls flow and is the valve you will use for balancing.

How to balance radiators step by step

  1. Turn the heating off and let the system cool. Wait until the radiators and pipework are cool enough to handle safely. This gives you a consistent starting point and reduces the risk of burns.

  2. Fully open both valves on every radiator. Turn each TRV to its highest setting. Remove the cap from each lockshield, then turn the valve anticlockwise carefully until it stops. Do not use excessive force if a valve feels stuck.

  3. Turn the heating on and identify the hottest radiators. Set the room thermostat to a normal heating temperature and wait for the system to warm up. Note which radiator heats first and which ones become hottest, usually those nearest the boiler.

  4. Turn the heating off again, then restart it. Once the system has cooled, close the lockshield valve on the hottest radiator by turning it clockwise. Record the exact number of turns, so you can return to the original setting if needed.

  5. Open the lockshield gradually. Turn it anticlockwise by about a quarter of a turn, then switch the heating on. Allow at least 15 minutes for the radiator and pipework to respond before checking the result.

  6. Work through the remaining radiators. Start with the radiators that heated fastest and make small adjustments to their lockshields. Leave radiators that are slow or lukewarm more open so they can receive a greater share of the hot water.

  7. Check the temperature difference. If you have thermometers, measure the flow pipe and return pipe at each radiator. A difference of roughly 10 to 12 degrees Celsius is often a useful target, although the correct result depends on the system and boiler.

  8. Repeat and record each change. Wait 10 to 15 minutes between adjustments and write down every turn. Continue until rooms warm at a similar rate, avoiding large changes that make it difficult to see what has helped.

Balancing can take time because water flow changes throughout the system as each valve is adjusted. Check the rooms over a full heating cycle rather than judging the result after only a few minutes.

What to check if a radiator stays cold

If one radiator will not warm after balancing, first check that its TRV is set high enough. With the heating off, carefully remove the TRV head if appropriate and check that the small metal pin underneath moves freely. Do not pull it out or force it; a stuck pin may need an engineer.

Coldness at the top of a radiator usually suggests trapped air. Turn the heating off, allow the radiator to cool, and use a radiator key to bleed it until air stops escaping and water appears. Protect the wall and flooring, then close the bleed screw without overtightening.

Cold patches at the bottom, discoloured water or repeated blockages can indicate sludge inside the radiator or pipework. If several radiators remain poor, the pump, system pressure or controls may also need checking. These faults are better assessed by a qualified heating professional.

When to call a heating engineer

Stop adjusting the system if a valve begins to leak, a fitting will not move safely or the boiler shows a fault. You should also arrange help if balancing makes little difference, radiators need frequent bleeding, or your heating system is noisy and slow to circulate.
